Thought it was cold? It sure was - it hasn't been this chilly in half a century
If we don't rise above 9.6C by 9am Friday, then today will be the coldest August day since 1970. Our top (so far) was just 9.0C.
(Friday note - yes, the top was 9.0C)
It was thanks to thick cloud trapping the chill, and that's just the first of three weather systems - that will drop a lot of snow on the alps, and some much needed rain in parts of Victoria.
Why 9am Friday? BoM measures maximums in 24 hour blocks, resetting at 9am each day. This is partially because, historically, weather stations used to be in post offices and that was their first job of the day. We're now stuck with it so we can compare observations.
